Jesus teaches his disciples to pray, “Father…Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven” (Mt 6:10). This is the Father’s work, but the church’s blessed call- participating in Heaven’s coming to earth by announcing and living it on earth now. However, I don’t think if I were an outsider I would guess that of the church. (I am not even sure if many insiders would guess that). It seems most outsiders (and many insiders) would instead describe the church as a people waiting to be taken away; tragically more akin to the Heaven’s Gate cult than to a kingdom coming to earth. Instead of praying for the Father’s will to be done on earth, I hear many people sing and pray to be taken away. I understand this want. It is, simply put, the need for solace, but it seems we have the wrong idea of where that solace is. Solace is not in a distant disembodiment, but in the will of the Father being done on earth. Christians are not escapists. We are a people who await a King from Heaven to come to us (Phil 3:20)! We are people who are to be about our King’s business while he is away working to expand his Kingdom by living for his Kingdom’s ways (Luke 19:11-27). His Kingdom’s ways are his will being done. The church is at present, a colony of heaven—a colony of God’s coming kingdom! Let us live it!
