Ever discover that in life that there a lots of ways to get things wrong? Seems that messing up is rather easy while doing things right is rather hard. I can think of endless ways of doing things wrong, but usually just one way of doing the same thing right. To make a difficult matter harder yet, we sometimes think we are doing something right only to find out later, when it all goes sideways, that we were doing it all wrong. Or, as Proverbs 14:12 says, “There is a way that seems right, but in the end it only leads to death.” This is not just true of specific tasks, as the Proverb alludes, but of life overall. There are numerous ways to do life wrong, but there is really only one way to do it right.
So, with this in mind, I have a question for you. What do you do if and when you discover you are doing something wrong? Are you stubborn and keep trying to do it the wrong way? That is close to Einstein’s definition of insanity as “doing the same things over and over expecting a different result.” Or, do you relent and try it differently. If you are at all like me you likely keep trying to do it wrong for much too long and once you have nearly destroyed yourself, relent.
So here is the deal. Jesus has come to teach us how to live humanly and open the one and only door that leads to life life for us. Surely, it is a narrow way and a small door and in that sense, it is exclusive– it is one narrow way and one small door. But, it is also radically inclusive in that it is open to anyone. It does not matter who you are. It does not matter who your parents are. It does not matter what your ethnicity is. It does not matter where you have been. What only matters is that you choose to relent and let Jesus guide you to the one true path that leads to the one small door of life.
